In these sizzling days all the plants are happy in a food forest context, because they're in dappled shade and have plenty of mulch. I'm using shrubs and trees as living trellises for beans,squash,pumpkins and tomatoes. Especially tomatoes really like to lean on neighboring plants. I planted elderberry cuttings all over the garden and they serve this role pretty good! This year I'm trialing drought resistant and productive plants such as Chinese red noodle asparagus beans, gandules(pigeon peas) , tromboncino ,cucuzza (edible Sicilian gourd) , cushaw and butternut squashes, sweet potatoes, Armenian cucumber, Azerbaijani cowpeas . Here's a super cool trick that I learned from @supertranquillo ! If there's a sucker growing out of your tomato plant,you can lay it down and make it root.
